Nitro Snowboards partners with ClimatePartner

Nitro Snowboards have partnered with ClimatePartner to make their 2021 Collection carbon-neutral. That isn’t the only environmental change Nitro have implemented, though, as the brand are working hard to improve the company’s sustainability at every level. Read on to see what other changes they have made.

Nitro Snowboards seem to be in the latter group that want to see real changes in the way that their products are produced and delivered. The company has made several significant changes over the past few seasons the big one for 2021 is that Nitro is now are partnering with ClimatePartner, which has seen Nitro offsetting 100% of their snowboards emissions, which means the 3 models of the 2021 Nitro Snowboards collection are officially carbon-neutral. The partnership with climatepartner allows Nitro the opportunity to find more efficient ways to reduce their carbon footprint not only for the construction of their products but over the whole product lifecycle.

Obviously, this is a great step for Nitro, and hopefully other brands will follow suit and make us feel better about ourselves as we go riding this winter. Nitro hasn’t stopped there, though, as they have many more changes that they have made to improve their sustainability.

Whilst Snowboarding will never be an environmentally friendly activity, many companies are rethinking how the company operates to be more sustainable. Recycled product materials, water-based inks and biodegradable packaging are now commonplace, and companies are trying to make their products more sustainable each year. Some brands do this as it's great marketing, others do it because they genuinely care about the future of the planet. Regardless of the changes occur because of marketing hype or the want to see real change, the result is the same and that can only be a good thing for the future of our planet and especially snowboarders that rely on weather so much.

100% FSC-Certified
The wood used in every snowboard is what makes a snowboard, the organic flex is something unique and special. Nitro say, “We feel it is important that we and everyone else respects the forests and the wood that is being used for the future of snowboard development, but more importantly the future of the planet and our Forests. We are proud to officially announce that all of our boards are made with wood cores harvested 100% from well-managed forests, and we are therefore entitled to use the official FSC label on all of our snowboards”.

Water-Based Inks
Nitro is using water-based inks for over 70% of their board top-sheets and over 30% of their bases. 15% of their bases use no ink.

Topsheet Finishes
70% of their boards have top sheets that are either uncoated or finished using a solvent-free lacquer with a Volatile Organic Compound rating of VOC:0.

Recycled Materials
Over 85% of the running bases are made using recycled raw material. Nitro board edges are made of 50% recycled steel.

100% Solar Powered
Nitro has installed a 700 KW solar power station on the board factory's roof, enough energy to power the factory, offices, and apartments of their factory staff. This solar power project was a goal Nitro set 2 years ago, and they are proud to say they have now reached it.

Resources
Nitro is heating their presses with water, not with oil or electricity. The grinding system uses a closed water circuit with integrated filtering systems. This saves energy and resources. Nitro has also started using thinner top sheets, this saves on raw materials and weight.
